I think what people were complaining the most about REs is in the meat grinder domination matches where it looked like REs were more effective than they actually are because they're all clusterfucked together and it only takes one or two to clear out a decent portion of the room, not to mention the objective being in a single, easy to watch spot. I almost never see REs used in any other game mode.
It's happened once or twice someone couldn't pay the price, and I'm afraid I had to rake 'em 'cross the coals.

I almost never see REs used in any other game mode. Remotes skipping under the null cannon and across the whole room had also a little something to do with it. The fact you could throw them 20ft is what got most people annoyed I wasn't at all aware of remote skipping and if you can show me what this is or tell me more about it, that would be appreciated, although I imagine it was a fairly rare problem or only abused by a few individuals.
Throwing REs that far required you to jump up and expose yourself, and still required you to be very close to the individual you were intending to bomb. Even then, though, the majority of RE kills were done by suicide bombers in meatgrinder domination matches and spawn camping, which, while annoying as all ****, is still a perfectly, stupidly valid tactic. If you're killed out in the open by an RE, not spawning in and not huddled around an objective with five other people, you allowed yourself into a situation where someone could get up to you and drop it right on top of you. And if someone really went out of their way to kill you, as a single person, with an RE, take solace in the fact that they are obviously scrubby enough that they can't get a kill any other way and are merely looking to K/D pad like a *****.
Now, in regards to the meatgrinder RE spam, I think I have a solution. Flux grenades should short circuit equipment and render them useless, not 'pop' them. This way if you see someone running through and dropping REs or looking like they're about to, you can save your team by fluxing said REs and rendering them useless and the RE spammer with less killing power. It would also make group hacks safer, as if your team is trying to hack an objective but didn't do an RE check, when someone drops a flux it could null the RE instead of setting it off and granting the trapper free kills they didn't even purposely achieve.
